Sphere Environmental Ltd., a growing hazardous materials and environmental consulting firm, is seeking a motivated and experienced Hazardous Materials Technician to join our team in our Burnaby, B.C. office.
At Sphere we offer a wide range of services, including but not limited to hazardous material identification, site survey assessments, abatement compliance inspections and air monitoring, project design and management services, hazardous material management programs, and material awareness training. We’re looking for driven individuals who thrive in high-level service environments, work independently with minimal supervision, and are eager to grow as part of our dynamic team.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITES:
- Conducting hazardous material surveys and assessments in a variety of structures, including the identification and sampling of asbestos, lead (building materials and coatings)), mould, silica, and other hazardous materials, per WorkSafe BC regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health regulations and WorkSafe BC regulatory requirements as they pertain to hazardous materials in the workplace.
- Knowledge of and ability to performing compliance monitoring for hazardous material abatement projects, including visual inspections and air monitoring.
- Managing laboratory chain-of-custody documentation, data interpretation, and technical report preparation.
- Assisting in the preparation of risk assessments, exposure control plans, safe work procedure compliance documentation as per WorkSafe BC requirements.
- Knowledge of construction methods, building components and building systems is considered an asset.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, or equivalent (documented) experience in the hazardous materials industry or related field.
- One to five years experience in a consulting role in the hazardous materials industry/occupational health and safety field.
- Valid WorkSafeBC Level S – Asbestos Surveyor Safety Certificate.
- On-the-job training will be provided for qualified candidates.
SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES:
- Strong ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong technical writing skills and data interpretation.
- Confident and clear verbal communicator with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to use hand and power tools safely.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and clean driving abstract (as requested), and access to reliable vehicle for work-related travel.
- Physical ability to climb ladders, lift up to 50 pounds, work within restricted/confined spaces (inspections), and work in both interior and exterior environments.
- You will be required periodically to wear personal protective clothing and respiratory protection (no facial hair) to perform your duties.
- Willingness to travel frequently within our service area and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as and when needed.
